Francesco Redi wanted to taste the best tiramisù in the world. So he created the most delicious challenge of them all, the Tiramisù World Cup, which has been selecting the best tiramisù in the world for three years now. For the 2019 edition, hundreds of tiramisù aficionados (who are strictly non-professional) have been gearing up to win the competition.
The road map is ready: after the Summer Selections in Bibione (near Venice) held this June, the Tiramisù World Cup is making a stop in Friuli- Venezia Giulia, where 60 competitors will face off over the first weekend of fall, September 21 and 22. Then, for the first time, the competition will head abroad: two days of selections with 60 competitors are planned for City2 and the Hilton Grand Place in Brussels on October 11, 12, and 14. In keeping with tradition, the last and most important dates will be held once again in Treviso: on November 1 and 2 there will be two days of selections, with the Grand Final in the heart of the city on November 3.
How to participate? The rules
Each competitor can choose to enter either the original classic recipe with savoiardi (ladyfingers), mascarpone, eggs, sugar, coffee, and cocoa, or a creative tiramisù, for which you can add up to three ingredients and even substitute the savoiardi used inside. This year’s challenge has become even more international. Apart from the Italians, there are also Australian, British, Swiss, Spanish, Austrian, and German competitors. And there’s a huge surprise for the new Tiramisù World Cup champions: in November, they will be flown to Curitiba, Brazil to take part in the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World, an event promoted by the Italian Foreign Ministry throughout all the Italian embassies across the globe, with lots of events dedicated to local Italian specialties.
The challenge is now international
And those who travel to Treviso from all over the world will be welcomed with open arms, just like a friend, Francesco Redi assures. This year, the theme of the Tiramisù World Cup is the classic aperitivo. “We realized that one of the moments we look forward to most during the day, when we meet up with friends or even have business appointments, is ‘spritz time,’ better known as aperitivo. It inspired the idea of sharing this moment with those who come to Treviso for the competition, as is customary when welcoming friends. At the same time, it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in a city which, right off the bat, impresses with its scenery, atmosphere, and artistic heritage.” And of course, for its most famous dessert, that most delectable symbol of Made in Italy tradition.
